Rose Festival Performance – Saturday, June 9, 2012
In 2012, we had a very large group of performers including three masters from China showcasing Chinese arts and culture in the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade.
For this year’s entry, we wanted to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Dragon by showcasing one Chinese dragon and two Chinese lions with dancers. In addition, we had wonderful Wushu performers and Tai Chi fan dancers.
Here is a video of the 2012 Grand Floral Parade performance by the Northwest Chinese Alliance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlRqKXy9lP4).
Special Note:
Wushu – which is sometimes called Guoshu, Gongfu, or Kung Fu in the West – is the overall term for all self-defense sports in China.
Tai Chi (also known as Taijiquan) is a Chinese martial art whose legacy dates back to the early 17th century. The name Taijiquan translates as “Supreme Ultimate Boxing” and is considered the highest form of martial art.
We are very proud of the achievements of all our performance teams from the US Wushu Center, NW Dragon and Lion Dancer Association and the Chinese Friendship Association of Portland, with active participation from many community members. Specifically, we thank Masters Yu and Gao of Portland’s US Wushu Center, Master Chow of the NW Dragon and Lion Dancer Association, and Ms. Zhang Li and Ms. Iris Zhao of the Chinese Friendship Association of Portland for their leadership in making this entry a great success.
Our volunteer performers worked very hard to get ready, putting in many hours after work and on weekend for long rehearsals. Here are some of the pictures during those rehearsals.
Celebration Dinner – Sunday, June 24, 2012, at Wong’s King Restaurant
A celebration dinner was held to honor our team and thank our community supporters. We were very honored to have City of Portland Mayor Charlie Hales and Mrs. Nancy Hales to join in the celebration.
